Building Love and Trust in Relationships

Trust is one of the most important factors in any relationship. It is the cornerstone of love, the solid foundation on which you can build relationships that last through troubles and blossom in the good times. Trust is the underpinning of other vital components of a loving relationship as well – faith, honesty and respect. If your relationships are unsatisfying, take the time to evaluate the level of trust – and then take steps to strengthen and build trust as a foundation for love. These steps can help you grow the trust, faith, honesty and respect in your relationships and provide a solid support for a lasting, true love.

Make Honesty a Habit

If you lie in little things, it will be hard to tell the truth in big things. That doesn’t mean you have to answer, “Yes, honey, those jeans make you look fat.” Rather, it means admitting you broke the favorite coffee cup, or were late because you spent half an hour talking to a friend after work rather than blaming your tardiness on traffic. When you make it a habit to be honest in small things, being honest in big things will come naturally.

Even the smallest, seemingly unimportant lies can put a crack in the foundation of your relationship. When a lie is discovered, it calls into question every truth you’ve ever told.

Keep Your Promises

There’s more to trust than believing the words that someone says. The deeper level of trust involves having faith in your loved one. It’s the kind of trust that you build one day at a time by keeping your word. If you promise to go to the flea market with your partner on Saturday, do it – and do it ungrudgingly. Every time you disappoint your partner, you drive a wedge into the faith that exists between you.

Respect Your Partner in All Ways

Respect is difficult to define but easy to recognize. It shows in all of your actions. Respect your partner’s words by listening carefully when he speaks to you. Respect her thoughts by considering her ideas seriously instead of dismissing them. Respect his privacy by not sharing confidences with which he has entrusted you. Respect her time by being punctual when you agree to meet her. Put yourself in your partner’s place and treat him or her exactly as you want to be treated.

Share Your Feelings, Hopes and Aspirations

Openly sharing your hopes, feelings and dreams are another way of being honest with your partner – but even more, it is a way of demonstrating your trust in your partner. Always remember that trust is a two-way street. You must give it as well as expect it.

Trust is the cornerstone of relationships and love is the capstone. Love cannot exist without trust, but when you trust and have faith in your partner, your love will grow and be strong.
